Everyone is under a lot of pressure these days.

I was speaking to a visitor at a wellness fair today, and I asked him how he relaxed. He began to tell me all the things he does that he enjoys doing. He works out at the gym. He likes his job. He has a daughter with special needs, who he considers during his day. He likes to go out and have fun, you know, socialize.

I asked him again, what does he do to relax? He gave me a questioning look. So I said to him,”Do you ever just sit down and close your eyes and take five minutes for yourself, to just relax?”

He said, “No, I never do that.”

I began to explain to him that even though he was engaged in activities that were enjoyable to him, it would be a very healthy for him to learn to give himself some deep relaxation.

When we give our body little five or ten minute deep relaxation breaks, it actually changes the neurochemistry in our brain. You see, we get out of balance, at least our nervous system does, anyway. Those little shocks we get; when we drive and have to slow down real fast because someone just cut us off, or we hear a sudden loud noise close to us, or we open the mail and get a reminder for a bill that somehow slipped through our personal accounting system, all serve to upset our equilibrium. JUst being in a crowded place with a lot going on can trigger an overload.

As soon as we sit down and close our eyes and do some deep relaxing breathing, things start to balance out again. And when they do, all kinds of good stuff begins to happen.

When we are overloaded, the adrenalin in our bloodstream wreaks havoc on our heart and arteries, lowers the protection our immune system offers us, constricts our arteries, and adds coagulants to protect us from bleeding in the face of battle. The problem is, today, we aren’t very likely to be faced with the threats our body is protecting us from. So, chronic stress creates chronic conditions that can be avoided if we learn to take some time a few times a day to relax and rebalance.

When we rebalance it’s like someone pushed the “reset” button. You feel better, see better, your internal organs function better, metabolism works better, and you make better decisions. Better important decisions, and better everyday decisions, like what to be eating, and how to be relating to the people you care about.

If you need some help with learning how to do that, there are CDs available to teach you how to enter into a deep restful state for just a few minutes. Listen to one of these CDs a few minutes everyday, and begin to build in better health, better immune system protection, a more youthful appearance, a narrower waistline, and a healthier awareness of what needs to be done to propel you through the life you want to be living.
